When I first signed up to volunteer with Umoja Education Trust in Rwanda, I knew I was stepping into the unknown. What I didn't expect was how profoundly the experience would reshape my understanding of community, resilience, and hope.
Arriving in Musanze District, I was greeted by rolling green hills and warm smiles. The school where I would teach English and ICT had 300 students and only four classrooms. Resources were scarce, but the children's eagerness to learn was boundless.
Over three months, I watched shy students transform into confident speakers. I learned that education is not just about transferring knowledge; it is about building confidence, opening doors, and showing children that their dreams are valid.
Rwanda taught me that hope is not passive. It is built, brick by brick, by people who choose to show up. I arrived thinking I had something to give. I left knowing I had received far more.
